Fun Skills Development

'Fun Skills' is suitable for riders who have recently learnt to ride without stabilisers and younger riders who enjoy cycling, want to develop and improve their skills and have some fun while doing it. Fun skills are a method of introducing riders to basic cycle control using a variety of practices including:

Follow the leader; Looking behind; Braking; Riding around and between cones; Slow Race; Passing bean bags; Riding with one hand; Negotiating obstacles.

Adults do not need to stay for Fun Skills. If the instructors are happy with the skills on display the group may go for a short cycle traffic free ride after playing games for the first part of the session.

Bikeability

This is for children that can already ride a bike, if your child cannot ride a bike without stabilisers please look at children's ‘Beginner Biking’ above or the one-to-one training option below.

Children will enjoy learning the skills and developing the confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.

There are three Bikeability levels, with each level designed to help improve their cycling skills, no matter what they know already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees on a journey from the basics of balance and control, all the way through to planning and making a journey by themselves on busier roads.

Children will typically start Bikeability lessons once they have already learnt to ride a bike.

  • Level 1 will help new riders to control their bike before they move on to developing on-road skills at Level 2. This is a single 2 hour session.
  • Level 2 is usually tackled by children in Years 5 or 6, before they leave primary school. This is a 4 day course of 2 hour sessions.
  • Level 3 teaches how to ride in different and more challenging traffic situations and is usually completed by children of secondary school age. To register participants must have already successfully completed Level 2 and be in school year 6 or above. This is a 3 day course of 2 hour sessions.

These courses are run in conjunction with the Herts County Council Cycle Training Team and will be led by their National Standards Bikeability instructors.

One-to-One Training

If one of our regular courses is too far in the future, fully booked or not at a time that you can make then don’t worry, you have another option - a one-to-one lesson. Having the full attention of our instructor, rather than in a group, will allow us to tailor the content and focus of your training around your individual needs.

This booking system is a manual process so there may appear to be available dates that have been taken - we will endeavour to ensure that this does not happen - but rest assured that any bookings will be processed in order that they were received and as quickly as we can possibly manage.
